The Kubota KX040-5 is the newest 4-ton class compact excavator from Kubota, the world's best-selling compact excavator brand. It replaces the popular KX040-4 with a redesigned cab, a larger 7 in color display, engine speed sensing and KubotaNOW telematics as standard. This unit is the enclosed cab model with heat and air conditioning, on rubber tracks with a dozer blade and auxiliary hydraulic lines plumbed to the end of the arm.

Power comes from the Kubota D1803-CR-TE5 3-cylinder common-rail turbo diesel, 40.3 gross HP. It digs to 11 ft 2.3 in, delivers 9,397 lbf of bucket breakout force and runs attachments on up to 17.2 GPM of auxiliary flow. At about 10,000 lb it is big enough for real excavation and still small enough to haul behind a heavy-duty pickup. Delivered free by flatbed freight to the contiguous 48 states.

Why the KX040-5

• Kubota-built common-rail diesel. The D1803-CR-TE5 is designed and built by Kubota. Engine speed sensing matches engine and pump output to the load, so the machine stays strong in heavy digging without wasting fuel.
• 11 ft 2.3 in of digging depth. Deep enough for basements, septic systems, footings, utility trenches and drainage, where a 2-3 ton machine runs out of reach.
• 9,397 lbf bucket breakout force. Plus 4,114 lbf at the arm, to tear through clay, hardpan, roots and rocky ground.
• 29.1 GPM pump capacity, 17.2 GPM auxiliary. The standard AUX1 circuit runs thumbs, augers, breakers, compactors and tilt buckets. A thumb roller on the joystick gives proportional flow, and a forefinger switch gives constant flow for augers and breakers. AUX2 is available as an option.
• Redesigned cab. Larger glass area and no roof-window slash bars for a clear view of the bucket, more head and foot room, a high-back seat, heat and A/C, and a front window that stows overhead inside the cab.
• Conventional tail swing for stability. The counterweight sits further back, which keeps the machine planted when lifting and digging with the arm at full reach.
• Two-speed travel. 1.7 mph low range for work and 3.1 mph high range to move around the site faster.
• KubotaNOW telematics standard. Machine location, hours, maintenance reminders and alerts from your phone.
